The way of considering the field of ESP today is far different than it was considered in 1960´s.In this period one of the main goals was to teach technical vocabulary of a specific field. Little by little other relevant aspects have been considered important such as subtechnical vocabulary, words, phrases that sorround technical words and what is most important learners´ needs, being the student the centre of the process.
Some tips in ESP are the following:
-It is quite important to choose appropiate and adapted materials to the students´needs and interests.
-Authentic language may not be what you assume it to be, so don´t trust in your intuition or the intuition of the ESP textbook writer.
- Analyze and teach language in use in the particular situation, relevant to the students. Observation and analysis are essentital to find out what the real languages needs are.
The same process has suffered the teaching of general english in our country.The method was centred in a grammatical aproach but nowadays it has changed. The goal is to achieve communicative competence enabling students to communicate in a foreign language. It means that teachers have to choose authentic materials, to develop all the skills needed for communicating, overcoming the method in which just lists of vocabulary and rules of grammar were taught.
